2/ JESUS, THE EARLY CHURCH
2/2 JESUS, CONVERSIONS
THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. The
Christians were gathered in Jerusalem on the feast of Pentecost when suddenly
there came from the sky a noise like a strong wind which filled the house where
they were. Then there appeared to them tongues of fire which came to rest on
each one of them. They were filled with the Holy Spirit who gave them the power
to speak in different languages. The people were amazed when they heard the
Christians speaking in different languages and wondered how this was possible.
THE FIRST CONVERSIONS. Peter spoke
to the crowd explaining how it was possible for them to speak in different
languages. He explained how the innocent Jesus was crucified; but three days
after his death, he rose from the dead and was alive. The people asked what
they could do to be saved. Peter told them they must ask for forgiveness of their
sins and be baptised. Those who believed in Peter, 3,000 people, were baptised
and received the Holy Spirit that day.
THE
CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY. The apostles continued to preach about Jesus and baptise
those who believed in him. The Christians lived according to the teachings of
the apostles by celebrating Mass (called the breaking of the bread) and by
prayer. Those who owned property or houses would sell them and give the
proceeds to the apostles who shared them with those in need. Every day more and
more people believed in Jesus and joined the community.
