2/ JESUS, THE EARLY CHURCH
2/1 THE DISCIPLES
THE FIRST FOUR DISCIPLES. As Jesus
was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Peter and Andrew, who
were fishermen. Jesus invited them to follow him and they followed him. Jesus then saw two other fishermen, James and
John, and also invited them to follow him. They immediately followed Jesus. He
told the four of them that he would make them fishers of men.
THE TWELVE APOSTLES. Among his
disciples, Jesus chose twelve men whom he named apostles. They would be taught by Jesus. They would go
out to preach that God loved them, had sent Jesus to help them, and would have
the power to drive out demons. The twelve apostles were Peter and his brother
Andrew, James and his brother John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James
the son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called a zealot, Jude the son of James, and
Judas Iscariot who became a traitor.
THE LAST INSTRUCTION TO THE
APOSTLES. The resurrected Jesus appeared to his disciples many times. As he
prepared to returned to heaven, he told them that they must go to all nations
and make them his disciples by
baptising them in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy
Spirit. They must teach to obey what Jesus commanded. This was the last
instruction he gave. The Church continues to go to all peoples sharing the good
news that Jesus loves them and wants them to be happy and share eternal life
with them in heaven.
