3/3 OLD
TESTAMENT FROM 1800BC TO 1000BC
ABRAHAM. God spoke to Abraham telling him to leave his
homeland for another land that God would give him. Abraham did as God had
commanded and departed with Sarah his wife, Lot his nephew, and with all his
possessions. God told Abraham that he planned to destroy two wicked cities.
Abraham pleaded with God to save the cities as there were some good people
living there. God heard his plea and delayed destroying the cities. God gave
Abraham and Sarah in their old age a son, Isaac, as he had promised. Abraham
was an obedient and faithful friend of God.
JOSEPH.
Joseph was the favourite son of Jacob and for this his brothers disliked him.
When he was visiting his brothers who were grazing their sheep, they sold him
to merchants who were on their way to Egypt. There he was sold into slavery. He
eventually became the second most powerful man in Egypt after the king. During
a severe famine, his brothers went to him seeking food. They did not recognise
him but he knew them. He eventually forgave them, provided them with food and
welcomed his whole family to live in Egypt. He was a caring and forgiving
brother.
MOSES.
Moses' parents were forced to abandon their infant due to the Egyptian policy
that Hebrew male infants must be killed. He was saved and grew up in the house
of the king. For his own safety, he fled to a nearby country where God
commanded him to lead the Hebrews out of Egypt. Thus began the exodus of the
Hebrews under the command of Moses. He
led them through the desert for 40 years until they reached the land which God
had promised to give them. Though he did not enter the promised land, he
faithfully followed God's directions even though he encountered many
difficulties. He was faithful to God.
