3/ JESUS
3/2 OLD TESTAMENT / SIN
THE MAN AND WOMAN DISOBEY GOD. God
placed the man and woman in a beautiful garden and told them they could eat all
the fruit except from the fruit of one tree. A snake told the woman a lie that
she would become very wise if they ate this special fruit. She believed this
falsehood and the man and the woman ate this fruit. They then realised they
were naked and they covered themselves. When asked by God, they admitted they
ate the fruit they were not to touch. This act of disobedience to God is called
sin.
THE PAINFUL RESULTS OF SIN. Because
of this disobedience, God punished them. Originally destined to live a life of
happiness, now they would live a life of suffering. The woman would bear
children in pain. The man would
have to work hard all his life to
produce enough food for them to live on. They would eventually die. They were
expelled from the lovely garden. The man was named Adam and the woman Eve. God
and man, originally friends, now became separated. Sin caused suffering,
separation, and death.
SIN
INCREASED, CAIN AND ABEL. There were two brothers, Cain who was a farmer and
Abel was a shepherd. Cain offered his harvest, and Abel his sheep to God. God
was pleased with Abel's gift but not with Cain's. Cain became so angry that in anger
he killed his brother. God then punished Cain for this great sin. Sin increased
in the world as shown how the close bond of brothers was destroyed by sin. Man
was not only separated from God but also with his brother because of sin.
