8/JESUS
8/2 THE LIFE OF MARY
MARY ASKED JESUS FOR HELP. Mary,
while attending a marriage with Jesus, noticed that there was no more wine. She
knew that this would cause the couple great embarrassment if the problem was
not solved quickly. She asked Jesus to help out and told the servants to do
what Jesus asked of them. Though Jesus hesitated for a moment, he ordered the
servants to fill the six large stone water jars there with water and bring some
to the headwaiter who was astonished at the quality of the wine. Mary helped
the couple as Mary helps us.
MARY AT THE CROSS. Mary and some
other women were at the cross of Jesus. When Jesus saw her and the disciple
whom he loved, he said to her "Woman behold your son." Then he said
to the disciple, "Behold your mother." This is explained by saying
that Jesus gave the Church Mary as the spiritual mother of the Church and of
all Christians. From the very foundation of the Church, Mary has been honoured
as the mother of Jesus and as the spiritual mother of all who believe in Jesus.
MARY WITH THE DISCIPLES. After the
ascension of Jesus to heaven, St. Peter and the other disciples returned to
Jerusalem to pray. Also Mary was there along with some other woman. Mary's
presence was of great importance as a support for the disciples and the Church
who were saddened at the death of their leader Jesus. To this day the Church
gives great respect to the mother of Jesus. In no way is she considered a god
or equally to Jesus. She is human but also the mother of Jesus.
