8/JESUS
8/1 MARY THE MOTHER OF JESUS
THE
ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE BIRTH OF JESUS. The Angel Gabriel visited the virgin Mary
at her home in Nazareth and told her that she was to become the mother of a son
and his name would be called Jesus. This child will be called holy, the son of
God. Wondering how this would be possible, she was told that this would be
possible because of the help of the Holy Spirit. Mary accepted this plan of God
when she said, "Be it done unto me according to your word."
THE BIRTH OF
JESUS. Obeying the decree of the Roman emperor to enroll in their home town,
Joseph took his wife, the pregnant Mary, to Bethlehem his home town. She gave
birth to her son Jesus and laid him in a manger as there was no room for them
in the inn. Informed by an angel of the birth of Jesus, the shepherds who were
in the area watching their sheep, visited the infant, Mary, and Joseph. So
overjoyed, they shared the good news with those living in the vicinity. Joseph
returned to Nazareth with Jesus and Mary.
THE BOY JESUS
IN THE TEMPLE. When Jesus was twelve, he went with Mary and Joseph from their
home in Nazareth to Jerusalem to celebrate a Jewish feast. As they began the
return trip, Mary and Joseph could not find Jesus with the others making the
trip. They returned to Jerusalem and after looking for three days, they found
him in the temple speaking with the teachers. When asked by Mary and Joseph why
he did this, he replied that he must do his father's work. Though not
understanding his response, the three returned home where Jesus lived with them
until he began his public ministry at the age of thirty.
