9/JESUS
9/1 WHAT IS PRAYER
JESUS TEACHES THE DISCIPLES THE OUR
FATHER. One disciple asked Jesus to teach him how to pray. In response to this
request, Jesus taught him the Our Father. There are two parts to this prayer.
The first part is about God our heavenly father. We pray that all will praise
him and obey him so that his kingdom of peace and happiness may come. In the
second part, we pray for our physical needs, our spiritual needs, forgiveness
of our sins, and protection from temptations. Prayer is communicating with God.
WE MUST OBEY GOD AND TRUST IN HIM.
Before his death on the cross, Jesus prayed for the strength to do God's will,
difficult as it was. He had come to do not his will but God's will. Jesus
trusted God would always love and help him during his suffering. He trusted
that God would help all people to gain happiness and eternal life through the
cross of Jesus. In our prayers, we too, must have this same attitude of obeying
God and trusting in God.
WE MUST BE PERSEVERING AND HUMBLE IN
OUR PRAYERS. In the parable of the widow and the unjust judge, Jesus taught the
importance of persevering in prayer. We cannot put a time limit for a response
from God. God will help us at the time he has determined. We must keep praying.
Jesus also taught the importance of being humble before God when praying. God
is supreme and we are his humble disciples. We do not tell God what to do. God
tells us what we must do according to his will.
