The Holy Family Sunday homily (28 December 2025)

The Holy Family Sunday

Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23 December 28, 2025

By Fr. Vincent Corbelli, MM

1. Story

One night one of John's two sons had a severe stomach-ache.  Thinking it would soon pass, he did not bring his son to the hospital.  The boy died suddenly that night.  Due to the great pressure of his guilt for not taking better care of his son, John's health began to deteriorate.  To make matters worse, his wife left him and he began to drink.  Gradually he lost his home and his land and finally John died.  His friends thought that John was a failure.  John's adult son was a kind, caring and loving father.  One of John's friends asked the adult son about his father.  He said his father would come into his room every night, give him a kiss and say, "I love you son."  John was not a failure.  He was a kind loving father who left behind a son who was a kind, caring and loving son.  Love was all important.

2. Gospel: Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23

A) GOD'S PROTECTION, LOVE AND CARE

God, through his angel, protected the Holy Family in their difficulties.  He directed them to go to Egypt to escape King Herod, then to return to Israel after Herod's death and then go to Nazareth where they lived for 30 years.

B) JOSEPH'S OBEDIENCE AND LOVE

Joseph obeyed God's commands and took Jesus and Mary to Egypt and then brought them back to Israel and finally moved to Nazareth where they lived safely and peacefully for 30 years.

3. APPLICATION TO LIFE

A) PRAY DAILY

We have the responsibility and power to make our home a holy and happy one by our prayers.  Each morning, ask Jesus to protect you and your family during the day.  In the evening thank Jesus for his care and protection for you and your family during the day.

B) FOLLOW JOSEPH'S GOOD EXAMPLE

i) FORGIVE: This is very important as there will always be some kind of misunderstandings and conflicts in a family.  We must forgive each other.

ii) KIND WORDS: Use kind, caring and gentle words when speaking with each other.  Use often please, thank you and I am sorry.

iii) HELP EACH OTHER: Each member of a family, according to his/her ability, must help out in doing house work.

4. CONCLUSION

Pray to the Holy Family for help in making our families holy and happy families.
