4/2 THE OLD TESTAMENT (OT)
THE STRUCTURE OF THE OLD TESTAMENT.
There are 46 books in the OT. These may be divided into three groups. There are
history books such as Exodus, Joshua, 1 and 2 Samuel, and 1 and 2 Kings. They
tell of the history of the Jewish people. There are prophetic books such as
Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel which contain the words of these great prophets.
There are the books of Wisdom such as the book of Psalms.
PEOPLE IN THE OLD TESTAMENT. Some of
the founders of the Jewish people were Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Some leaders were Moses, Kings Saul, David,
and Solomon. The prophets include Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. The also
include the stories of Tobit, Judith, Esther, and the Maccabees.
THE CONTENTS OF THE OLD TESTAMENT.
There is the story of creation including the sins of men along with the history
of the Jewish people from the call of Abraham to the Maccabees. There is the
story of the prophets warning the people to repent and their captivity in
Babylon and their return to their homeland after their captivity.
