4/JESUS
4/3 NEW TESTAMENT, GOSPELS
THE GOSPEL STRUCTURE. The Gospels
tell us about Jesus. The four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and were
all written in Greek from 60AD to 100AD. The general outline is Jesus' infancy,
public life, passion and death, resurrection and return to heaven. Matthew and
Luke use Mark as their guide in their Gospels.
PEOPLE
IN THE GOSPELS. The main person is Jesus. Along with Mary his Virgin mother,
and Joseph his foster father are the twelve apostles with Peter as their
leader. Included are the women who follow and serve him, Jewish leaders, the
high priest, the Roman governor, and Pontius Pilate. There are also the
Pharisees, a pious group of strict believers and the Sadducees, wealthy men who
supported the Roman occupation of Israel.
THE CONTENT OF THE GOSPELS. Matthew
and Luke began with the birth of Jesus. This is followed by the baptism of
Jesus by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. All four gospels contain
miracles performed by Jesus and his parables. Then finally there is his
passion, death, resurrection and his going to heaven.
