7. JOSHUA
After the death of Moses, Joshua succeeded him and led the Hebrews
into the promised land.
JOSHUA SUCCEEDED MOSES. God promised the people that he would give
them a land of their own to live in. He instructed Joshua to take over the
responsibility of the deceased Moses to lead them into this new land. Joshua
was instructed to be faithful to the law which God gave to Moses. God would be
with his people if they obeyed the law. They would succeed in conquering
the land.
THE CROSSING OF THE JORDAN RIVER. The people prepared to cross the river
and the priests carried the ark of the covenant (a wooden box with the Ten
Commandments) ahead of them. When the priests entered the river, the water stopped
flowing. This made it possible for them to cross safely. When they had crossed,
the priests then crossed the river and the water resumed its normal flow.
THE COVENANT AT SHECHEM. Joshua gathered all the leaders of the twelve
tribes at SHECHEM and related how God had helped them on their journey
from Egypt through the desert to the promised land. It was their duty to cast
away idols and to obey only God. They promised to do this. He then made a
covenant with the leaders which he recorded in the book of the law of God. He
then dismissed them, and they returned to their homes.
Joshua succeeded Moses and led the people into the promised land. He
reminded the people to love and obey only the one true God.
